Hip and Groin

Physiotherapist

Michael O’Brien, PhD, is a Research Fellow at La Trobe University, where he focuses on hip and groin conditions.  He recently completed his doctoral studies investigating impairments and outcomes in adults with hip dysplasia.  In addition to his academic role, Michael practices clinically at Melbourne Orthopaedic Group (MOG) Sports Medicine, where he is part of The Hip and Groin Clinic, treating a wide range of patients with hip and groin injuries – particularly adolescents and young adults.

Originally from New Zealand, Michael has over 15 years of experience as a physiotherapist across professional and recreational sports, clinical research, and international healthcare settings. Before transitioning to research, he worked with Melbourne Victory Football Club and published research involving both A-League and AFL athletics.

As a postdoctoral research fellow, Michael is currently setting up a national hip dysplasia registry and coordinating a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing physiotherapy and surgical treatment for young adults with hip dysplasia.  He is also actively involved in education, regularly delivering professional development sessions and presenting at international conferences and Physiotherapy Master Programs.
